The recent Supreme Court verdict of India on UIDAI’s Aadhaar has ensured stronger data protection safeguards which will accelerate India’s digital journey.
In the landmark verdict, it restricted the use of Aadhaar authentication by private entities and allowed its mandatory use for the filing of Income Tax (IT) returns, allotment of Permanent Account Number (PAN) and welfare schemes for citizens of India. Since the verdict, the Unique Identification Authority of India has come up with the latest feature to make Aadhaar even More Secured and introduced ‘Masked Aadhaar’
Masked Aadhaar allows the cardholder to partially cover the 12-digit unique identity in the downloaded Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar. It masks the digits of the Aadhaar number in a way that only the last 4 digits are shown and the rest of them will be covered with star marks. But the ‘Masked Aadhaar’ will still show the QR code, demographic information, and your photograph.
Towards the first step, the Unique Identification Authority of India wrote to the banks to clarify that Aadhaar eKYC can only be used to authenticate beneficiaries of government subsidies and welfare schemes. And for other customers physical or electronic offline Masked Aadhaar can be used for verification.
And the Unique Identification Authority of India also clarified that service providers can use offline verification tools like masked Aadhaar that will leverage the unique ID without authentication or any access to biometrics.

- Choosing the second option as shown in picture i.e. masked Aadhaar option leads to a copy of Aadhaar in which the first eight digits of the personal identification number are star revealed and only last 4 digits are shown.
Step 5: After selecting masked Aadhar, you need to click on the “Send OTP” button to proceed
A verification code i.e. One-time password is then sent by the Aadhaar system to your registered mobile number. This mobile number is the mobile fed into the Aadhaar system against your profile.
